Lead Ruby on Rails Engineer

From the team that brought you Codewars, Qualified is searching for a Lead Ruby Developer to join our engineering team! We are looking to pair with someone that wants to help create the best job candidate experience for software developers - if this piques your interest, we want to hear from you! If you’re not familiar with who we are just yet, you can learn more about us by visiting our website or Twitter!

Attributes that you should be nodding your head to:

  • Efficiency - you understand and care about how all the pieces fit together (front-end, database, network layer, etc.) and how they impact the performance of our applications.
  • Ownership - because you’re driven by your craft, you’d never call code "released" until you’re confident it’s correct.
  • Leadership - you know how to identify gaps and will do what needs to be done to keep things moving. You are comfortable having a team meeting once a week to direct the course of your projects and give feedback to others.
  • Autonomy - you don't need to be told what to do in order to get things done. You enjoy the autonomy of owning your work and making decisions about it.
  • Passion - you enjoy playing with new tech and solving new problems, even if you don’t have experience in it yet. Every unsure step is an opportunity to learn something new!

We’d also love someone that is:

  • Product-focused - writing great code using cool tech is fun and all, but you aim beyond that and want to build something truly great that users will love you for.
  • Experienced with large Ruby projects - you are very familiar with Ruby on Rails, have experience working with sophisticated APIs, ideally have worked on a SaaS platform, understand how to write scalable software, and can dig into the front-end when you need to. Experience with at least one SPA framework, such as Angular, React or Vue is also ideal.

Things You Might Do:

Qualified is a small, fast-growing, and remote-first company, so you'll likely get experience on many different projects across the organization including working on our Codewars product/platform. That said, here are some things you'll probably do:

  • Build an advanced code matching tool to identify similar solutions across thousands of entries. Add new features and data models to our API
  • Build an advanced workflow engine that allows teams to create any sort of assessment flow they wish.
  • Improve email messaging
  • Work on integrations with our cheat detection
  • Improve performance & refactor existing code
  • Build out a set of tools, both on the API and front-end, to help our customers integrate better with our API - including being able to simulate web-hooks and API calls.
  • Modernize our Codewars API
  • Integrate features from our code execution engine
  • Help us to build a next generation web IDE

Working at Qualified comes with a lot of great perks! First and foremost, we are a remote-first company. We believe that a remote culture enables our team to balance their own work/life schedule more effectively, and as such, it has increased our company’s overall performance. Because we don’t work in an office, we are completely results-driven - this means that as long as you are performing high-caliber work, you can choose a schedule and routine that works best for you! Work best from a home office? That’s great! Want to work from a hammock in Tahiti? As long as you’ve got a stable and fast wifi connection, have fun!

To ensure that our team can work efficiently together, we are currently looking for someone that is based within three timezones of Pacific Standard Time, but if you are outside of this range and feel that we’re a perfect match for each other, please reach out anyway - we’d love to connect!

We also offer

  • Competitive salary (we don't use remote as an excuse to pay less)
  • Great healthcare (with medical, vision, and dental options; Qualified makes a contribution toward your medical each month)
  • Unlimited Vacation Policy (with a required minimum of two weeks off a year - we like our employees to be refreshed and happy!)
  • Annual Team Retreat to an awesome place

How to Apply

We have a non-standard application process - after a quick phone interview, we ask you to take an assessment via our platform so that we can learn about you and so that you can get a feel for how our platform works. From there, you will be invited to take a second assessment, and that is followed by several additional virtual interviews with people from our team to chat about the position, your ideas for it, and for us to both get to know each other better.

Once you’ve applied, you will hear back from us, even if we don't seem like a good fit. (In fact, throughout the process, we strive to make sure you never go more than seven days without hearing from us.)

About the position:

We are on the hunt for someone that is passionate about building and growing our sales team and company revenue! As a team of 12, we pride ourselves on working hard - most of us wear multiple hats, and enjoy taking on new challenges. The unknown is exhilarating, rather than terrifying. Asking for help is common, and a thirst for learning is expected. That being said, we appreciate that our team has a life outside of the company, and are conscious of our workloads and schedules. Want to work from a cruise ship? Prefer working from your home office? Like wearing pajamas to work every day? Need a break mid-day to recharge? If your work is getting done, great! We’re all adults, and like having the autonomy to work in the way that works best for ourselves, whatever that means. As long as you have a stable internet connection, and a drive to do your best work, that’s all that’s required!

While we are fully remote, we do ask that applicants are willing and able to work during standard North American business hours. While there is flexibility in exact working hours, there is an expectation to be able to regularly attend team meetings and your working hours should largely overlap with our team’s (Pacific Standard Time).

  • Annual Team Retreat to an awesome place

Part-Time Content Developer (Contracted)

Are you extremely passionate about software development and love taking on new challenges? What about creating them?

Qualified (the makers of Codewars.com) is looking for developers who want to build coding challenges and assessments. These challenges will be used to help gauge the hireability of your fellow software devs around the world.

Qualified is designed to allow for a large spectrum of real-world software challenges to be created. We don't like interviewing for companies who only give us CS algorithms or whiteboarding challenges, and neither do most other developers. We have built a platform for truly gauging the competency of software developers, using a more natural environment for being evaluated.

We are looking for candidates with experience working with various current web and mobile technologies. You should understand good coding practices and know how to write well crafted unit tests. Ideally you should be creative and love to build challenges, though we will also be providing specific requirements for which challenges should be developed.

  • Fast learner – We’re looking for software engineers who thrive on learning new technologies and want to build something that will be used by many. You should be able to adapt easily to meet the needs as our product scales and as we need to innovate.
  • Systems Thinker – In addition to having an intimate knowledge of the whole web stack, you understand how all the pieces fit together (front-end, database, network layer, etc.) and how they impact the performance of applications.
  • Passion – You feel ownership over everything you ship; you'd never call code "released" until you’re confident it’s correct. You love to code. You are driven by your craft.
  • Team player – You believe that you can achieve more on a team than you ever could alone. You rely and thrive on others' candid feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Self-Directed - You don't need to be told what to do in order to gets things done. You know how to identify gaps and needs and do what needs to be done to keep a young startup moving.
  • Motivated - You don't need to work in an office to stay motivated. You thrive in a remote working environment.

  • At least 3+ years of professional coding experience OR 1+ years of professional coding experience and a CS degree.
  • Very strong in at least one of: Ruby, JavaScript, Python, Java, C#, Swift and Php.
